Jewelry Designer Alexis Bittar Teams Up with St. Regis Hotels

The St. Regis group of hotels is second to none, featuring sweeping views, luxurious rooms and tons of amenities, all set in the most idyllic of locations. For the opening of their 21st location, the St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort in Puerto Rico, the hotel group has launched a capsule collection of jewelry from designer Alexis Bittar. Bittar, who received the 2010 CDFA Accessory Designer of the Year Award, created the line as a contemporary nod to St. Regis founder Caroline Astor and her now-famous jewelry collection. Although Astor's affinity for diamonds and pearls are clearly taken into account on these designs, Bittar's signature lucite detailing can also be found in every piece. WIth prices ranging from $310 to $490, the designs aren't cheap, but are modern classics you'll love forever. Scoop up your fave now at alexisbittar.com.

Net-A-Porter Introduces New Season of Wedding Gowns

Luxury e-tailer Net-A-Porter, known for carrying exclusive labels and hard-to-find styles, has just released their latest season of hand-picked bridal gowns. The site, which already has a dedicated wedding boutique (you can shop for you and your party!), carefully curates both white ready-to-wear and bridal gowns into one chic selection. Two of my favorites? This sweet silk-faille, embellished bow Jason Wu dress (far left) and the ultra-glam asymmetrical silk-satin wrap dress from Lanvin (near left). The best part about these sensational designer pieces? You really can wear them again.

Global Goss: An Airline Slam Book

I have a not-so-age-appropriate love for Mean Girls. I can’t get enough of the Toaster Strudel zingers, the hip mom and the overuse of “I know, right?”. Maybe it’s the fact that my doppelganger Tina Fey wrote and starred in it, but in all honesty, it’s the movie’s realistic approach to the dreaded Burn Book that really makes me appreciate it all. In my Judy Bloom-reading youth we called such thing a Slam Book; these days it’s hello(!) internet. TripAdvisor is a site that relies on reader criticism to rate destinations, hotels, restaurants and spas. A lot of travelers just won’t book anything unless they’ve gone to the site first. I’m so not one of those people, JS. And I always looked at the site as a sort of travel Slam Book. But I’m about to change my tune on the announcement of TripAdvisor’s latest venture—an airline-rating feature. The system, which launched last week, is a bit more structured than the free-for all on the lodging and destination side. And asks for contributors to rate carriers in various predetermined categories including baggage handling, value, seat comfort and in-flight service. Doesn’t it sound just so fetch?

Ring In the New

Happy New Year! And welcome to our exciting new, updated site filled with even more news, photos and fabulous features to help you with all your planning needs.

And, if you, along with celebs Reese Witherspoon, Lee Ann Rimes and Ginnifer Goodwin, recently got engaged over the busy holiday season, then my heartfelt congratulations! You must be euphoric and maybe a little bit anxious about all the planning details. Relax! As long as you stay organized and focus on a few key things at the start (and ask your fiancé to pitch in when needed!), you’ll be fine. Here are my top five tips for the newly engaged:

Flash Mob Wedding!

Flash mobs, although becoming increasingly popular, are still a new concept. And how you ask does this random burst of synchronized motion have to do with weddings? Well, recently a Boston couple wed in this fashion. Many people have alternative weddings; however, this is the most unique I’ve ever seen.

The Kleimans are anything but typical. On their first date Caroline said to Jon, “You should probably just propose to me.” Jon responded immediately with a proposal and paper ring! For their wedding location, they chose the Prudential Center and for the ceremony, flash mob. The guests were also the participants and learned the moves along with the bride and groom. Watch a clip!

Here’s why they chose this wedding style:

“We think that life and weddings should be fun so the whole idea was to bring our friends together and share a wacky fun moment together.”

Mara Says...

The Budget Guru recently had a conversation with Mara Urshel, co-owner of Kleinfeld and star of "Say Yes to the Dress." We spoke about dress shopping and your big bad budget--who would be savvier about this topic than Mara? Check our May 2011 issue for her tips from the shopping trenches.

Meanwhile, I wanted to share with you an interesting tidbit. When I asked Mara  how brides have changed over the last 10 years, she said, "The main thing is that brides are smarter about money now. Many have been to school and have professions and they're more practical about life in general. Ten years ago, we had a lot of young brides coming in with their parents who were paying for the dress. Now that is much less the case. Brides and older and savvier, and most understand that they don't necessarily have to have the most expensive dress."

There's nothing better than a money-smart bride!
