San Miguel de Allende welcomes Culture Vultures

An old city is a good place to begin a new marriage and the artistic, colonial city of San Miguel de Allende teems with romance and cultural opportunities. The town, which is now a hotspot for American expats and artistic types, enchants with breathtaking views (check out El Mirador, a lookout point that affords sweeping city vistas), dazzling churches (like La Perroquia), crafts and antiques shopping (we love Fabrica la Aurora) and darling little bistros — La Mesa Grande, Muro, Pescau de Mar and Café Rama are perennial favorites. A walking tour gathers every other morning at the central El Jardin park.

A private estate whose centuries-old mansions share fountain-laden courtyards and a long pool, Casa de Sierra Nevada feels like a village in the heart of San Miguel. Its 37 sconcelit storybook rooms feature ample bathrooms and shaded patios. A pair of elegant eateries in-house serve modern takes on traditional Mexican dishes (room rates start at $317 a night; casadesierranevada.com). casa de sierra nevada Photo courtesy of Casa de Sierra Nevada

Gallery-like Hotel Matilda is named for a Diego Rivera portrait inside. Classic photos adorn its 32 modern rooms and sophisticated suites, boasting panoramic balcony views. Restaurant Matilda combines San Miguel’s international flair with Mexican spirit (room rates start at $316 a night; hotelmatilda.com).

For a city/country honeymoon stay at Hotel Nirvana located just outside of town. Set in a riverside cactus forest, this tranquil getaway abuts Sancturio de Atotonilco, a Baroque church called “Mexico’s Sistine Chapel.” Nine suites convey serenity—Tranquilidad is a private cottage with a vast bathroom; Imagina’s terrace has a table for two and an expansive view. There’s a small spa and yoga on offer, and the in-house Mexican fusion restaurant wins raves (room rates start at $140 a night; hotelnirvana.mx).
