There’s a place just minutes from ever-bustling Cancun so pristine that no cars are allowed — in fact, the streets are made of sand. This tiny island off the north coast of the Yucatan Peninsula is home to more than 150 bird species, including flamingos that live in the shallow lagoon from which the islet takes its name. While the main industry here is fishing, whale shark viewing is quickly gaining popularity. Visitors can also spend the day exploring the Isla Holbox’s blissfully deserted golden sands and sparkling sea.
