The task of planning the rehearsal dinner traditionally belongs to the mother of the groom. But you don't need to stick to the traditional sit-down or buffet dinner. Pool Party

Don't have a pool? Hosting a winter wedding? Guess what—you can still have a pool party! If your out-of-towners are all staying at a hotel with a pool, inquire about reserving it for a few hours. No hotel pool? Check with your local YMCA or gym to see if it has an indoor pool that can be booked for private parties. Then, all you need to do is order a few pizzas or sandwich platters for a laid-back affair. Keep in mind: Many hotel pools don’t provide lifeguards, so consider hiring your own, especially if you have a lot of kids attending.

Bowling

For a fun night that your guests won’t forget, book a few lanes at the local bowling alley for a couple of hours of unlimited play. If you’re having a larger rehearsal dinner, you may even be able to book the entire alley for a good price. What to serve: Channel a retro 50’s diner with tasty burgers, fries, and milkshakes.

Keeping it small and intimate? Host a potluck in your home with your nearest and dearest. Ask each guest to bring a favorite dish—and a copy of the recipe. Near the entrance, place a scrapbook, glue sticks, and pens on a table, along with a sign asking your guests to paste or write their recipe in the book! This is a great way for the soon-to-be-newlyweds to gather delicious ideas and break out their brand new cookware from their registry—not to mention a great way to finally get their hands on those favorite secret family recipes!

Arcade

For the spirited group, head out to a full-service arcade, like Dave & Buster’s, where you can get food, drinks, and games for as little as $21.99 per person. You can reserve a private room to enjoy your dinner, then let loose in the arcade.

It doesn’t get much easier than a backyard BBQ. Keep it simple by grilling up some burgers and hot dogs, or take it up a notch with steak and salmon filets. For a lasting impact, purchase (or build) a fire pit for around $150 and set it ablaze when the sun goes down. No one can resist a delicious s'more hot off the fire.
