How to Deal When Your Ex Gets Engaged

Your Facebook feed is likely blowing up with engagement news right about now; we're in the midst of engagement season, after all. But few things can toy with your emotions quite like seeing that an ex just got engaged.

Now imagine reading that news in Us Weekly instead — when we saw that not just one but two of Lauren Conrad's exes just got engaged, we couldn't help but sympathize.

Whether you're single, attached, or even happily married, it's a weird feeling when an ex proposes to someone else. It doesn't matter if you haven't spoken to him in ten years and never would've married him anyway. But if you dated him more recently and were starting to plan a future together, it hurts that much harder. Here, how to cope.

Tip of the Day: Are you and your fiancé diehard sports fans? Incorporate your favorite NFL, NBA, MLB, or college team in your wedding details. This couple asked their priest to hold up a Broncos sign after they were pronounced husband and wife! You could also show off your team pride in your groom's cake design, favors, wedding program, escort cards, and guest book.

Whether the posterior of your dress is plunging, embellished, or in a keyhole shape, there's no better way to shock and awe guests as you walk down the aisle.

Embroider your bridesmaid's initials on their bouquet ribbon to personalize their blooms. You can even select a special quote or Bible verse that is a reflection of your friendship, like this bride did.

Many wedding coordinators will build in time for the couple to view their reception space before guests arrive. Sneak away to practice your first dance, take deep breaths before greeting loved ones and shout, "We finally did it!"

We'll always have a special place in our hearts for limos, but for some couples, non-alternative options like trolleys, a horse-drawn carriage, or even a ski lift are more their speed. Your transportation should reflect the overall theme of your event. If you're considering an unusual vehicle for your arrival or departure, keep your dress style in mind: Pedaling a bicycle built for two in a ball gown might not be physically possible!

Is there anything more adorable than a four-legged friend at a wedding? Case in point: The photo below. Your pet is a member of the family, and there's lots of different ways to include them in your big day, such as bringing them to your engagement shoot or donating favors to the ASPCA foundation in honor of your beloved pooch.

12 Fun Facts About Wedding Planning

Whether you've been engaged for just two days or over two years, let's all take a step back and think about how far we've come in our relationships to get to this exact moment. The stationery pros at Wedding Paper Divas have put together a fun infographic on everything from when most couples first say "I love you" to where they'll vacation for the first time together as husband-and-wife. This is based on survey data they compiled from June 2011 to 2012.

I'm happy to see that 22 percent of receptions are held in an "other" venue (i.e. not a ballroom or barn), something we've witnessed in online real weddings submissions. It's not uncommon for us to receive gorgeous photos from around the world in courthouses, art museums, zoos, and more. (Check out our list of the craziest places couples got married in 2012.)

Tip of the Day: Want to be the best maid of honor ever? Above all, be a great listener. Encourage the bride to confide in you about anything (or anyone), with the promise that your lips are sealed. Every bride needs a reliable person she can vent to, which helps get all of that wedding stress out.

Show that you care about the bride's wedding plans by sending her a quick text message or giving her a call after an important appointment. In turn, brides should make their MOH feel involved in the plans by telling them specific tasks they need help with (e.g. choosing a centerpiece design, shopping for their gown).

Tip of the Day: It may be too chilly for an outdoor wedding in December, but you can still decorate the outdoor areas of your wedding venues. In addition to wreaths, garlands and other traditional winter décor pieces, look to the trees along driveways and walkways as the perfect spot for displaying sweet and sentimental signs.
