The latest trend in wedding photography: after sessions!

An after session is an additional photo shoot, with you and your partner decked out in your wedding gear, that takes place anywhere from a few days to a few years after the big day.

Why would a couple want an after session? Consider these scenarios...

  • You get your pictures back from your photographer, and you hate them.
  • You ran out of time between your ceremony and reception to get all of the pictures you wanted.
  • You want an excuse to wear your dress again, but you're not into the idea of a "trash the dress" session.
  • You and/or your spouse dropped major pounds after the wedding and wish you had done it before the big day.

Caroline and Matt are the perfect example of scenario #4. The couple collectively lost 100 pounds during the three years after their wedding. With their anniversary approaching as they reached their weight loss goals, they decided to mark the occasion — and their accomplishments — with a wedding photo shoot. With the dress now several sizes too large, Caroline simply clamped the back so that it fit as perfectly as it did on the big day, without adding the extra cost of getting it fitted.

"[After sessions] are great if there is anything you wish you could change from your wedding, if you want to document the changes in appearance, or even just for fun to put your dress back on," said Caroline. "We did it around our 3rd anniversary, and it was so fun for us because you feel like you are getting married again. We had some special moments together remembering our special day."

Their after-session photographer, Diana Rush, explained that she started receiving so many requests for after shoots that she now includes them in her wedding packages.

"On a wedding day, we are so constricted by a timeline," said Rush. "Most of the time, I only get 30 minutes with the couple to do their romantic photos together, and so often, you have wedding guests wandering around watching or a wedding planning hovering!  It's really hard in 30 minutes to get the couple really comfortable, as you know you need to hurry up and get to the reception. The after session is the perfect answer to this as you have so much more freedom!"

For couples who didn't book Rush as their wedding photographer, after session prices start at $200. The most common package is $600, which include photographer's fee, all digital images, and a hair and makeup artist for the bride.
