This Central American country may not be very far away (it’s just a three-hour flight from Miami), but its under-the-radar status helps make it a revelation for many U.S. travelers. With beaches, lively historic quarters and great food, Panama is about so much more than its famous canal (which, we must admit, is also cool). This central American country features loads of natural wonders, including mountains, islands and highlands. There are also indigenous communities for culture fans and a vibrant nightlife.
Base yourself in capital Panama City, home to the international airport. The city is incredibly diverse,
boasting modern skyscrapers, shopping and casinos, as well as archeological sites and even jungles to explore. Take a trip back in time with a visit to the Old Town, an area full of historic architecture and plenty of stories. At dusk, everything takes on a magical quality. Stop at the San Jose Church, drink in the views from the Plaza de la Independencia and make sure to have your photo snapped with the sea as a backdrop. The neighborhood also has countless restaurants—Mustasa is tops for tapas, while the gourmet Manolo Caracol is considered one of the best eateries in the city. One Sunday a month, there’s a flea market and food fair, where you can sample local delicacies, pick up handicrafts and enjoy live performances. Of course, no trip to the city is complete without a visit to the Panama Canal. At the Miraflores Restaurant, snag a table outside so you can watch ships float along the waterway.
Another scenic stop is Amador Causeway, a beautiful road flanked by the ocean on both sides. Hop a cab to the beginning of the Causeway, then stroll through the main section to enjoy sweeping views of the city, stopping for lunch atone of the restaurants along the way. From here you can also take an inexpensive, half-hour ferry ride to Taboga Island, a former pirate hangout; sunset sails are also available.
