Morelia

Morelia lets you time-travel. This northern town looks a lot like it did in the 1500s, with soaring baroque buildings, an imposing cathedral and a pretty historic district. Morelianas love their flowers (there’s a rose park and an orchid conservatory), and they cherish their sweets. Seven days a week, sweethearts can taste their way through the Mercado de Dulces — the candy and sweets market. Later, try Morelia’s celebrated carnitas — fried pork tacos — with a chaser of charanda (vanilla rum).

Cantera Diez is a 300-year-old mansion with 11 individually appointed rooms featuring ornate ceilings, stone walls, iron gates, oversize tubs and moonlit terraces. This pretty hideaway is located just across the street from the cathedral and near quintessential Morelia restaurants like San Miguelito and La Azotea, where seats are coveted for Morelia’s Saturday night light show (rates for the two-night honeymoon package start at $800 for two and include accommodations, one dinner, breakfasts, a scenic evening tram ride, a welcome bottle of champagne and more; canteradiezhotel.com).
