Los Cabos

The fun factory known as Los Cabos (short for the area’s two villages of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo) is set at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. A thousand miles long but only 50 miles wide, this Hollywood hotspot is surrounded by the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean, so it isn’t any wonder that seafood here is tops. It’s also the place that gave the world Baja fish tacos, which are beer-battered and served with crisp cabbage, white sauce and dripping in avocado. Other regional favorites include the succulent Puerto Nuevo lobster with vanilla sauce, Baja crabcake with chipotle peppers and shrimp with damiana liqueur, a fruitbased brew said to be an aphrodisiac.

Seafood—in fact, all food—is taken quite seriously at Marquis Los Cabos, a gorgeous resort and spa set between the two town centers of Los Cabos. Dining options here stretch across the waterfront. At the 20-seat Canta de Mar, renowned French chef Thierry Dufour offers a dazzling menu showcasing the freshest local fish. Vista Ballenas serves a delectable selection of Cal-Mex favorites and a memorable breakfast. Marquis’ bar tempts with marvelous margaritas and tasting flights of Baja wines, just now making a splash in the wine world. Guest rooms are filled with art and sunlight; suites have large private terraces for taking in the luminescent Pacific (room rates start at $490 a night and include breakfast; marquisloscabos.com).
