Wedding Etiquette Q&A: "What should we do if we love the venue, hate the menu?"

Q: We found a venue we like, but I’d like the chef to revamp almost the entire menu. Is it OK to ask him for a lot of changes, or would this be insulting?

A: Requesting minor changes to the reception menu is standard, and most caterers will happily oblige. They'll also prepare kosher, vegetarian and vegan dishes upon request. However, if your preferences involve completely revamping the menu then this might be too difficult for the chef. After all, his staff is trained to prepare certain types of dishes, and a special order of different foods or ingredients that may not be readily available in his kitchen could be problematic and prove costly.

On the other hand, depending on what your wishes are, he might be able to work with you. Why don't you speak with the caterer about your menu requests before booking the venue? If he is unable to meet all your needs, then you may have to compromise, especially if your heart is set on having your reception at this particular venue. Ask if he can prepare just one or two of your requests, and then agree to the rest of the already established menu.

But if you and your fiancé are real foodies, and the types of dishes served are most important to you, then you'll need to choose another reception site that’s better equipped to meet your expectations.
