Fun fact: The viral philanthropic movement has raised $88.5 million so far (and counting!). Buzzfeed reports that the #IceBucketChallenge was inspired by Pete Frates, a Boston College baseball player whose career was cut short after he was diagnosed with the disease two years ago. His former teammates issued the challenge to their friends, in an incredible gesture of solidarity, where it has since become a national sensation. If you nominate someone and they don't take the challenge, they have to donate $100 to an ALS charity.
