Guess who blew into our offices yesterday, all bundled up in a cozy winter jacket? Every bride’s best friend, David Tutera of WETV’s “My Fair Wedding.” David and our editor in chief, Diane Forden, have been bridal-industry buddies forever. David’s a regular whirlwind of activity, and now his new book The Big White Book of Weddings, a how-to wedding planner, has hit the bookstores.

Here are some budget gems about venues that I pulled from the book.
- Is the venue contractually obligated to work with certain vendors? If so, you may not be able to negotiate better deals for your party.
- Always ask (before signing on the dotted line): What is the overtime charge? Is it counted as every thirty minutes or an hour?
- What is included in the fee? Having the venue during setup and breakdown times? Cleaning fees? Valet? Coat check? Bathroom attendants? Typically, these are priced out separately from the per-person fee?
- If the venue happens to be a museum or other public place, can you make a donation to its preservation society or nonprofit organization (which is then tax-deductible) in lieu of paying a rental fee?
By the way, all of us in that meeting—Diane, David, Jennifer Lazarus (our website maven) and I—wish you a wonderful 2010!
