Prospective grooms, take note! Hiring a photographer to covertly capture your engagement may be the latest trend when popping the question, but this groom took it a step further: Josh kept it a secret for almost a year that the proposal was photographed so that, on the morning of the wedding, he could surprise Jenn with a framed photo of the engagement!

We chatted with Jenn to find out what was going through her mind when she opened up Josh's incredible gift.

Bridal Guide: What was your reaction when you saw the photo?
Jenn Morrissey: I was truly amazed by it. I didn’t have the slightest idea that he hired a photographer on that day, and I couldn’t believe he was able to keep it a secret for almost a year!  It was such a thoughtful idea and a really sweet gift that commemorated our engagement season as we looked ahead to an even greater chapter of our life together.

Looking at the photo transported me back to the proposal, and it was fun to relive those feelings of excitement and surprise. I think you can see that on my face in the picture!

BG: How did Josh plan the proposal and gift?
JM: First of all, it’s important to know that Josh has a history of being a prankster. But, lucky for me, this usually translates into romanticism. Our proposal was a carefully orchestrated surprise, so in hindsight, I suppose it shouldn’t have shocked me that he had an idea like this up his sleeve! He even said that, at one point, he considered waiting 10 years to give me the gift! Can you imagine?!

What’s funny is that, prior to the wedding, I had this concern that Josh wasn’t aware of the “tradition” for the bride and groom to exchange gifts. I didn’t want to make it a big deal, so when we talked about it, I said, “Let’s just be super low key about it.” He didn’t even hint that he had all of this planned. And my gift (a good bottle of whiskey) really paled in comparison.

The morning of our wedding day, my bridesmaids came over to get ready together, and that's when the gift was delivered by Josh’s sister. At the time, I was getting my hair done, so I set it aside, hoping to steal away from the crowd to open it in private.

BG: Who else was in on the plan?
JM: To my knowledge, Josh and the photographer were the only two in on this surprise until just weeks before the wedding when Josh shared the secret with his family and our photographer, Alyse French, so that she could capture the moment.

BG: Where is the photo now?
JM: This photo is currently displayed on a photo shelf in our bedroom, alongside some other meaningful prints and photos.
