I may not necessarily be a "trends" kind of bride, but I've fallen head-over-colored-heels for these popular wedding trends. I'm not the only one—even though you may have heard of these months ago, they're still picking up steam on all of the bridal blogs I read.

1. Birdcage Veils

If you want to transform your everyday look to retro glam, these will do the trick. Birdcage veils never fail to make me look twice at a bride. The netting is just perfect and looks extra special when a little flower is added to the side. Don't forget to add red lipstick!

2. Backyard Weddings

How wonderful is it that now brides can throw weddings in their own backyard and still bring the chic factor? Add fairy lights, a soda stand, a DIY photobooth, and a table full of homemade pies (baked by family members) and you're golden.

3. Do-It-Yourself Charm

DIY weddings are all the rage at the moment! I absolutely adore the idea of spending time doing all the details on your own and being able to enjoy all of your hard work on the big day. We are actually making our own ceremony programs, dinner menus and a banner with our names on it, among many other things.

Check out our easy out-of-the-box tutorials to get inspired, including: a bubble chandelier, ceremony programs, a brooch bouquet, and bridesmaid's kit.

4. Colored Shoes

Whoever said everything in your wedding has to be the same exact shade? Rubbish. These days weddings are all about pops of color! I’m very proud to say our wedding has adopted this trend. Yours truly will be wearing red shoes, pictured here. Real Bride Crista shares in my adoration: She asked readers to do a quick poll on which colored heels she should wear at her wedding.

5. First Looks

With just over a month to go until our wedding, I am still undecided as to whether or not I will have a first look. A lot of couples tell me that it is an amazing moment and I won't regret having that few minutes just to ourselves. Plus, the photos always come out gorgeous with a ton of emotion.

But part of me loves tradition— I want Luke to have to wait until I get to the altar to see my in my big, white dress (that's not big...or even white!) Perhaps I will consider this creative "first look" where we don't actually see one another.

Throughout this whole wedding planning experience, if there is one thing I’ve learned so far, it's that, basically, I want to be Luke’s wife. Despite all of our obstacles along the way—we had to change our reception venue at the last-minute, which is a topic for a whole other blog post—that is my aim. And these days I am seeing more and more couples who feel likewise and are finding creative ways to make their wedding special, so that we brides don't lose track of what the day is really for.
