4 Reasons You Shouldn't Put Off Changing Your Last Name

If there was such a thing as a national newlywed calendar, October would be a completely booked month. Spring and summer weddings (and their ensuing honeymoons) are wrapping up, leaving couples a brief span of time to settle into newlywed life before the holidays hit.

At the top of over 88% of newlywed couples’ to-do lists is making the switch to their married last name(s). Whether the bride opts to take her spouse’s last name, hyphenate, take two last name sans hyphen, take her maiden name as a middle name, or replace her middle name with her maiden name, there are a series of legal forms and notification letters to be completed and filed. The same is true for men taking their spouse’s names or same sex couples taking their spouse’s name or blending their last names.

Curious why October is the month of married name change? There are four key factors that influence the uptick in newlywed name change this time of year:

Taxes: During the wedding planning process and honeymoon, no one wants to think about the joy of tax season as newlyweds. But if a couple is planning to file joint taxes under their married name, the individual(s) changing their name need to file their SS-5 form to affect their name change with Social Security prior to December 31. It is also advisable to file the IRS 8822 to inform the IRS of your new name. The filing of both of these documents well in advance of filing your taxes prevents any confusion regarding your identity that could cause lengthy delays of your tax returns.

Dream Come True: Paralyzed Bride Walks Down the Aisle

Gina Giaffoglione stunned her relatives and friends when she walked down the aisle on September 13, 2014, arm-in-arm with her dad, Gary. She was injured six years ago in a car crash that left her paralyzed from the waist down. When her fiancé John Springhower proposed in 2012, the Iowa native accepted, with one condition: The wedding would have to wait.

After her life-changing accident, this former gymnast continued to coach students using her upper body strength. She was determined not to let her handicap stand in the way of her dream day as well. She endured a year and a half of strenuous physical therapy sessions with her father at CHI Health Rehabilitation at Immanuel Medical Center to make her secret wish come true.

"When you can't feel anything, and you're doing something you used to do that you used to take for granted...it's a floating sensation you can't even explain. Everything just seems to feel so good at that moment," Gina tells KETV.

Husband Uses Wedding Photos to Bring His Wife's Memory Back

Just one month after getting married, Tunicia Hall woke up in North Shore University Hospital with zero recollection of her wedding. The 43-year-old newlywed thought she had a bad headache, but her prognosis turned out to be far worse: she had suffered a rare brain hemorrhage that had wiped out her short-term memory loss.

Although she recognized who her 50-year-old husband Raleigh was, she couldn't identify her age or even what year it was. In a press conference, the groom confessed, "I felt like I lost her." After two days of waiting and praying that she would recover on her own, he decided that he had to do something — anything — to try and get his wife to remember again. So he covered her room with 1,000 photos from their big day!

"The whole point of putting up the pictures was to connect her with those that love her," Raleigh told ABC News. Gazing at all of the beautiful (but foreign) images on her four walls, Tunicia miraculously began to connect all of the missing pieces. Today, the couple celebrated Tunicia's recovery and their three-month anniversary, with a cake and a live performance of their favorite song.

"When we came in at the first hospital in the ambulance they said she had a 50-50 chance. I've been able to say that hope happens," Raleigh reveals. His wife chimed in that "With his love and God's grace I'm still here."

The Coolest New Cake Trend, Courtesy of Disney

Thanks to Disney, you can now make your wedding cake magically come to life!

They recently unveiled their new high-tech confections at the Fairy Tale Weddings Expo. How it works: Your wedding cake starts as a blank canvas, then it's brought to life through projected moving images. The mesmerizing effects are straight out of a fairy tale — watch Tinker Bell sprinkle pixie dust across all of the tiers and Cinderella arrive at the ball in her horse-drawn carriage:

The process is fully customizable, so you also have the option of projecting your favorite photos of you and your groom, your proposal video or any other details that are significant to your relationship. Disney patented augmented reality wedding cakes back in 2012, and this incredible technology is now being offered as part of their Wedding Wishes Collection.

Unique Centerpiece Ideas You Haven't Seen Before

One of the best ways to express your personal style is through your wedding table décor, and the possibilities for centerpieces are endless — from towering floral and crystal vases to lower vessels filled with flowers and surrounded by votives. I recently came across a few unique table items to consider.

For a rustic/romantic celebration, the adorable Double Metal Birdcages on Pedestal by Valerie, about $30, is ideal. Place a candle inside or fill them with blooms. Use on reception tables or on the guest book and escort card table.

Or set this great-looking lantern on your tables, the Luminara Churchill Lantern with Flameless Candle and timer, about $49.50. It’s great for outdoor celebrations and I love that the candle “burns” all night!

These shimmery indoor/outdoor Hand-Blown Mercury Glass Mason Jars by Valerie will also help light up your night. They also come equipped with a timer, and you can even set the lighting effect: Slide the switch to the “Steady” position for continuous light or to “Twinkling” for a magical firefly effect. Available in white, blue and green; a set of three is about $36.25.

George Clooney Marries Amal Alamuddin!

Auguri to George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin, who were married in Venice on September 27!

The Oscar-winning actor/director, 53, and London-based human rights attorney, 36, met in Italy last September, so it's only fitting that they became husband and wife in the city of amore. They tied the knot at Aman Canal Grande Venice, arriving by vintage water taxis as a crowd of fans cheered along the canal. Clooney's close friend (and the former mayor of Rome) Walter Vetroni officiated the ceremony. Following the ceremony, the couple and their guests enjoyed a five-course dinner and dancing before capping off the evening with late-night drinks and fireworks by the pool. The bride wore an Oscar de la Renta gown, and the groom chose a Giorgio Armani tuxedo.

The star-studded guest list included Rande Gerber and his wife Cindy Crawford, John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, Matt Damon and wife Luciana Barroso, Bono, Bill Murray, Anna Wintour, Richard Kind, and Ellen Barkin.
