An assortment of wood and glass boxes and spheres hang at varying heights in an untouched Swedish forest. Upon closer inspection, those cubes, silos and in one case a bird's-nest-type structure are actually individually designed and appointed suites suspended from enormous evergreen trees. Access to the five rooms is by wooden pathways that wind throughout the enormous, family-run property — with plans to add an additional 19 suites.

The main area, the '50's-style Brittas Hostel, houses a wood sauna, bar, lounge and the family-style restaurant. As is expected given its architecture and remote location, the hotel functions at a highly eco-friendly efficiency. Seasonal activities that celebrate the natural surroundings are easily arranged by the innkeepers (room rates start at about $598 a night and include breakfast; treehotel.se).

Inkaterra Reserva in Amazonica, Peru
Deep in the Amazonian jungle there's a collection of screened-in cabins set along the banks of the wide Madre de Dios River, a feeder for the mighty Amazon. The 35 thatched-roof accommodations have sumptuous bedding and running water, but are romantically unencumbered by electricity. Excursions, which are heavy on the wildlife and bird viewing, are led by the resort's naturalist guides.
