Sail Away: A Honeymoon Cruise on Anthem of the Seas

Recently, I had the pleasure of taking a weekend cruise on Royal Caribbean International’s amazing new ship, Anthem of the Seas. I only wish it had been a weeklong cruise as this ship is nothing short of spectacular with so much to do and see that I was in awe practically 24-7. For honeymooners, this ship has plenty of fun, adventure, and romance at the ready. Here’s a sampling of what to expect.

From the moment I entered the stunning Royal Esplanade to our final disembarkation, I was enthralled. The international crew and wait staff (1,500 onboard!) were all warm, friendly and accommodating. We so enjoyed chatting with them, and their professionalism and enthusiasm definitely enhanced our cruise ship experience.

This magnificent 1,141-feet long, 136-feet wide ship has 18 decks and 2,090 staterooms. It is the most beautifully designed ship I've ever been on, hands down.

    Dining: American Icon Grill

There are no less than 20 incredible places where you can savor a fabulous meal. I indulged in food tastings in as many restaurants as possible and was impressed by the diversity and deliciousness of everything I tried. There are four complimentary dining restaurants for all guests. In every restaurant there are tables for two with décor and ambiance that’s absolutely delightful.

Plus, with the ship’s “Dynamic Dining” options you can choose between a “Choice” or “Classic” plan. The “Choice” option allows you to decide when, where and with whom to dine. There is no set dining time, assigned seats or formal nights. The “Classic” option is more traditional, where you’ll be seated at an early or late time and rotated through a preset lineup of complimentary main dining restaurants, along with the same tablemates and wait staff.

    Dining: La Patisserie

The [email protected] is a great place for lunch. Here you can order salads made to order, handmade soups, hot-pressed sandwiches and enjoy the meal in the adjacent Two70 room that has sweeping floor-to-ceiling glass walls and incredible views. The first food truck at sea, the SeaPlex Dog House, offers gourmet hot dogs. Sorrento’s is an authentic New York pizzeria, and you’ll definitely want to indulge in burgers and fries at Johnny Rockets (love their milkshakes!) or stop for a French pastry, a Starbucks coffee or hot chocolate at La Patisserie.

One of the ship’s most popular highlights is the futuristic Bionic Bar where a pair of robotic bartenders will take your order via a tablet and then shake, stir, and deliver your perfect cocktail.

  • Adventure: The North Star

    Adventure: The North Star

OK, adrenaline junkies, get ready for truly unique, one-of-a-kind experiences onboard the Anthem. I’ll start with the amazing North Star that really sets this ship apart.

  • Adventure: The North Star

    Adventure: The North Star

This glass capsule rises more than 300 feet in the air and gently rotates up and over the sides of the ship providing jaw-dropping 360-degree views. It was a thrill to take a ride in it, and I guarantee you’ll want to go up in the North Star more than once.

  • Adventure: RipCord by iFLY

    Adventure: RipCord by iFLY

Another highlight is the RipCord by iFLY, the first skydiving experience at sea. Yep, skydiving! You’ll take a short training course, learn correct flight positions, get outfitted in flight gear and enter a tall glass chamber for this take-your-breath-away experience. Not to worry: an instructor is with you throughout the one-minute-long flight.

Other activities to enjoy include the Flowrider Surf Simulator and a Rock-Climbing Wall.

  • Fun and Games: SeaPlex

    Fun and Games: SeaPlex

Another can’t-miss feature is SeaPlex, the largest indoor active space at sea. Here you can roller-skate, try a flying trapeze or partake in a childhood favorite of mine, bumper cars!

SeaPlex also has a full-size basketball court that can also be used for soccer, volleyball or badminton. There are also a number of Activity Rooms for table tennis, air hockey, Xbox and other fun games. So let your competitive spirit (and inner child) emerge as you and your new husband engage in some fun, one-on-one games at sea.

  • Entertainment: Spectra’s Cabaret

    Entertainment: Spectra’s Cabaret

“Let Us Entertain You” seems to be Anthem of the Seas’ mantra as there are plenty of exciting, dazzling and magical performances to enjoy throughout the cruise. In Two70, a multi-level room with floor-to-ceiling glass walls, you can experience “Spectra’s Cabaret.” Your senses will thrill to the music, live performers, aerialists, lights and the incredible display of technology as glass walls transform into gorgeous videos and six huge robot arms housed in the ceiling reach out to control LED TV screens.

  • Entertainment: We Will Rock You

    Entertainment: We Will Rock You

Rock fans, Queen fans and fans of all great musicals will love “We Will Rock You” a fun-filled tribute to the iconic British rock band that’s been a huge hit in London for over 12 years.

  • Entertainment: The Music Hall

    Entertainment: The Music Hall

After the show, party and dance in the Music Hall to tunes from a live band or DJ.

More entertainment options: Catch a film on the outdoor movie screen. Take in a comedy show with Tom Cotter, the first comedian to reach the finals of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” or enjoy cocktails, Latin music, and dancing at Bamboleo. Up the romance factor at the Schooner Bar where a pianist entertains and revel in the cozy intimacy of the Vintages wine bar. I also enjoyed the Solarium located in the front of the ship where you can order a drink at the bar, recline on a lounge chair and simply enjoy the view.

If you think all of that cruise-ship dining will result in unavoidable weight gain, think again. Anthem of the Seas has a running track and a state-of-the-art fitness center to help melt away the pounds, and fitness classes are available throughout the cruise.

There are two outdoor pools and two indoor pools where you can swim laps (or just get in some much-needed R&R) as well as four whirlpools to soothe your aching muscles.

Be sure to visit the Vitality At Sea Spa and Salon to your hair and nails done or indulge in a massage, facial, body wrap or specialty treatment. Caveat: Book an appointment early, either pre-boarding or as soon as you’re on the ship, as the time slots do fill up quickly.

    Hi-Tech Wonder

Anthem of the Seas boasts the fastest Internet at sea, and the technology on the ship is amazing. While onboard you can be online 24/7, keep in touch with family and friends via social media channels and even have face-to-face conversations. You just connect with royal-wifi, no password needed. And even if you don’t book a stateroom with a balcony you can still enjoy a Virtual Balcony — a high-definition LED screen that displays real-time sights and sounds of the sea!

With Anthem’s technological advancements, boarding was a breeze. Two days before the sail, I filled out the boarding documents online, uploaded a photo ID, and included a credit card number for any onboard purchases. I printed out the boarding confirmation and was on the ship in well under ten minutes. I loved the WOWband wristbands that were in our room upon arrival. I wore it like a watch and used it as a room key and to make purchases. No need to carry a wallet around! With a simple tap, it also helps navigate the ship. You can also keep track of your luggage with RFID luggage tags that allow real-time tracking from your smartphone. So smart and so easy!

Technology is creatively used in a lot of the art installations throughout the ship as well.

I got a kick out of the gorgeous “Pulse Spiral” light fixture in the Royal Esplanade: When you place your hands on the sensor tablet below it, the 200 light bulbs start to pulsate to the rhythm of your heartbeat!
