Why You Should Consider a Same-Day Edit Video

My one-year marriage anniversary is next week (hooray!), and the number-one thing from my wedding that guests still ask me about is...the same-day edit video. Ironically, that was the easiest thing that my husband Jason and I had to plan. We added it to our video package because the premise sounded fun, but we honestly didn't know what to expect since we had never attended another couple's big day that had one.

The sweet video footage floored our family members and friends, and we couldn't be more thrilled with the way it turned out:

For those of you who may not be familiar with them, a same-day edit (or SDE for short) is a cinematic mini-documentary that tells the story of the wedding day as it unfolds from the bride and groom's perspective. It includes footage from all of the intimate moments of your event, including the pre-ceremony preparations, ceremony, post-ceremony and first dance.

Unlike a standard wedding trailer, it's screened to all of the guests during the reception. The editing process is done on-site, usually in just a few hours, so there isn't time for reviews or re-edits (make sure you truly love your videographer's work and vision before signing on the dotted line!).

My videographers at Abella Studios explained to us, "A same-day edit is a great way to 'wow' guests who were unable to attend the ceremony portion of the day. People are always in disbelief after seeing one of our same-day edits — they can't believe how something so amazing was completed in such a short time."

Approximately 40% of their clients opt for an SDE, but the service is becoming more popular as more engaged couples see their work online. They're also a great option for couples who may not be able to afford a full video edit.

So how do couples make their video shine? The videographers instructed us to show positive energy, and they balanced out giving direction with encouraging us to be spontaneous while the cameras were rolling. Song selection is incredibly important since it will convey the mood that you're going for, whether it's fun and upbeat or emotional and dramatic. Anyone can pick a tune from the top 40 pop charts but selecting something that has personal significance to you — whether it's a tune from your childhood, a song that was popular when you first met or just lyrics that speak to your relationship — will give the video another dimension.

Also, don't be shy to share any special requests in advance with your videographer. I chose to read a letter that Jason wrote to me on the big day, which ended up being used as a great voice-over. Other ideas include filming the first look, any special gifts you exchange, a meaningful thank-you gesture for your parents, etc.

The proof is in the pudding — check out more amazing same-day edit videos we love!
